WE Welcomes Jusian Zakhary '27 as New Student Representative to the Board of Ed

West Essex High School junior Jusian Zakhary was officially approved as the newest student representative on the West Essex Board of Education at last night’s Board meeting.

Jusian becomes only the fourth student in district history to hold this role. The position was first established in 2022 when the West Essex School District adopted a new policy allowing high school students to elect one of their peers to serve on the Board. This initiative was part of the District’s Strategic Plan to enhance school culture and climate by giving students a direct voice in their education.

High School Principal Dr. Kimberly Westervelt introduced Jusian at the meeting, sharing some of her many accomplishments. “She is a member of FBLA, Key Club, Pre-Med Club, and the Basketball Team,” Dr. Westervelt noted. “Her favorite subjects are English, History, and Business Law, and after college, she hopes to serve in the military, attend law school, and become a lawyer. I have no doubt she’ll achieve all of those goals.”

Dr. Westervelt also described the rigorous process Jusian underwent to earn her seat. She attended an interest meeting, gathered endorsements from students and community members, submitted a platform statement, filmed a campaign video, and ultimately won the student election.

Board President Deborah Sacco-Calderone warmly welcomed Jusian to the Board, emphasizing the importance of having a student's voice at the table. “We appreciate anything you can bring to us,” she said. "We want to work together as one [school] body.”
